In the fall of 2016, Village Rep took part in a national theatrical event as more than 100 theatre arts organizations presented live staged reading of the Sinclair Lewis classic, IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE in partnership with Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Written in 1935 during the rise of fascism in Europe, Lewis’ darkly satirical novel follows the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness.
Village Rep is proud to once again partner with Berkeley Rep, as they reprise their original production with the same director, and much of the same cast including Oscar nominated actor David Strathairn, but this time as a radio play in four episodes, just in time for the 2020 election. The audio drama is being offered FREE to arts patrons across the country through theatre organizatons to encourage dialogue and motivate citizens to exercise their civic power and VOTE.
The radio production, in collaboration with broadcast partners including ACT, Roundabout Theatre, Seattle Rep, Arena Stage, La Jolla Playhouse, South Coast Rep and many others including Village, can be heard TUESDAY OCTOBER 13 AT 8PM EST via YouTube. A LIVE Q&A session with the creative team at Berkeley Rep will take place after the broadcast.
